In a significant initiative to enhance student employability, Zetech University in October 2024 organised a week-long career fair that brought together industry leaders and students from various universities. The event aimed to bridge the gap between academic training and professional opportunities, providing students with direct access to potential employers.

The career fair underscored the necessity for stronger collaboration between universities and industry stakeholders to enhance students’ readiness for life after graduation. Wambui Macharia, Manager of People and Talent Development, highlighted the significance of these partnerships. “Collaborations like this can sharpen students’ skills and prepare them to navigate a job market facing high unemployment rates,” she stated.

Sophia Kihanda, Manager at Paleo Hotels, emphasized the fair’s role in enabling students to directly inquire about internships and attachments without the usual obstacles. “The hospitality industry encompasses significant IT components that many students may overlook,” she noted.

Faith Wanjiku, Manager at ODOO Africa, discussed educational programs designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, describing such initiatives as the “best gift” to students entering the workforce.

Professor Owen Ngumi, Dean of the School of Education, Arts, and Social Sciences, expressed concern about the growing trend of graduates seeking opportunities abroad. He encouraged students to develop a sense of patriotism and explore local career paths. Additionally, he announced the launch of three new computer science programs at the university, aligning with the demand for tech-savvy professionals.

The career fair also featured interactive stalls where students and industry representatives showcased their innovations, creating a practical experience that connected education to employment.

Zetech University continues to play a crucial role in bridging the gap between academic learning and the job market, ensuring that its graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of today’s workforce.
