On July 11th, 2024, Zetech University advanced its mission to shape the future by hosting a pivotal mental health event focusing on the boy child. The event was to"Embrace the Men’s Moment,"this title aimed to raise awareness about men’s mental health and the importance of emotional expression.
The orator of the day, Mr. Atanda Oluwa Femi, addressed an unexpected audience of both males and females. He began by explaining the theme of the event,"Breaking the Silence."He emphasised that"men can cry,"challenging long-held societal norms that discourage men from showing vulnerability. Surveys from around the world find that males everywhere are reluctant to talk about their mental health and are more likely to die by suicide than females
Atanda shared his personal life story, highlighting the significance of self-expression for men. He pointed out that while the Girl Child Empowerment movement has been in the spotlight since the 19th century; societal norms, cultural expectations, and stigma have continued to silence men."It was at the point when I spoke out about my situation that I got help concerning my homelessness,"Atanda revealed, illustrating the transformative power of speaking up.
The event featured various segments, including a question-and-answer forum where students discussed their challenges and their impact on mental health. Gambling addiction emerged as a significant area of concern. Many Gen-Z individuals, struggling with joblessness, turn to gambling as a quick solution. However, this often leads to substantial financial losses, resulting in depression and mental suppression. Mr. Atanda urged the audience to persevere and work hard for their achievements instead of seeking shortcuts.
A major highlight of the event was Mr. Atanda’s offer to fund and mentor 10 student entrepreneurs, transforming them into business trainers. This initiative aligns with Goal 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which promotes good health and well-being. The offer was met with enthusiasm, reflecting the students’ eagerness to learn and grow.
Atanda's speech resonated deeply with the audience. He discussed the societal pressures that men face, including the expectation to be stoic and resilient at all times. These pressures often lead men to suppress their emotions, which can have detrimental effects on their mental health. He emphasized the need for a cultural shift where men are encouraged to express their feelings without fear of judgment.
The forum also provided an opportunity for students to share their own experiences. Many spoke about the challenges they face, including academic pressure, financial difficulties, and the struggle to balance various aspects of their lives. The open dialogue allowed students to connect with one another and realise that they are not alone in their struggles. In addition to addressing mental health issues, the event aimed to build a supportive community within the university. By fostering an environment where students feel safe to express their emotions, Zetech University is taking a significant step towards promoting mental well-being.
The event also highlighted the importance of mentorship and support systems in helping students navigate their challenges. The success of the event underscored Zetech University’s commitment to breaking the silence around men’s mental health. By creating a platform for open dialogue and providing resources for emotional support, the university is empowering its students to take control of their mental health and well-being.
In conclusion, the"Embrace the Men’s Moment"event at Zetech University marked a significant milestone in the university’s efforts to promote mental health awareness. The event not only provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by men but also offered practical solutions and support. Zetech University’s dedication to empowering minds and fostering a supportive community is evident in its ongoing initiatives, ensuring a brighter future for all students.
