Zetech University Media techizens recently participated in an in-depth Solutions Journalism training facilitated by Africa Solutions Media Hub, a distinguished non-profit organization dedicated to advancing journalism that promotes meaningful social impact.
The session, held at The Ruiru Campus, aimed at equipping aspiring journalists with the tools to craft compelling narratives that not only examine pressing societal issues but also producing balanced, constructive, and impactful stories that inspire positive change and foster a more informed and engaged society.
Ms. Lilian Kaivilu, a seasoned journalist and development communicator, thoroughly led participants through the foundational principles of Solutions Journalism, underscoring the critical role of rigorous research, analytical rigor, and balanced narrative construction. “You can pitch solutions stories during slow news cycles or tie them to ongoing debates to stay relevant. Also, scout for grants to support your fieldwork.” She said.
Through this immersive engagement, students explored Solutions Journalism as a progressive model that moves beyond conventional, problem-centric reporting. They tackled how to tell stories that balance critique with constructive insight, offering audiences a more holistic and hopeful view of the world. This narrative approach doesn’t shy away from the difficulties people face but seeks to uncover what works, why it works, and what can be learned or replicated.
In an era where media is often saturated with conflict, crisis, and controversy, Solutions Journalism presents a much-needed shift, one that restores public trust, empowers communities, and encourages civic engagement. By amplifying stories of resilience and innovation, this approach reinforces journalism’s potential as a tool for progress, understanding, and meaningful change.
Zetech University continues to demonstrate its commitment to preparing future media professionals by providing training that equips them with essential skills and perspectives needed to thrive in an ever-evolving media landscape.
