Zetech lifts Challenge Cup in Great Rift Rugby Tournament
The Zetech University rugby team impressed in the hotly contested 29th Top Fry Great Rift 10 aside championships held in Nakuru County, clinching the Challenge Cup during the heated tournament.
Pooled alongside Brumbies RFC, Mount Kenya University stingers and KCA falcons, the Zetech Oaks kicked off with a 14-5 win over rivals KCA University before succumbing to a narrow 7-10 loss against MKU Stingers. Quick to pick up, the Oaks claimed an additional win, silencing Brumbies 5-0.
Plate Cup Qualifiers
This performance resulted in the team progressing to the Plate Cup Quarters where they faced Kenya School of Law dealing them a whopping 26-0 blow, advancing to the semifinals. Thereafter, the Oaks clashed with KCA, drawing 5-5 at normal time, proceeding to sudden death that ended in a tie. This moved the organisers to make a decision on which team would qualify to play in the finals.
Having been awarded the slot, the Oaks faced Meru RFC, claiming an additional 7-5 win against the opponents to win the Challenge Cup in the competition that the players believe favoured the more build and experienced teams participating.
According to team player Eugene Odhiambo, pursuing a degree in Purchasing and Supply Management, the leadership of the recently recruited coach Ken Moseti played a key role in securing the successive wins. He further appreciated his team players for focusing on nothing less than victory in each and every game.
The team is now preparing for the commencement of the annual KUSA 7’s league in two weeks before a likely debut in the National 7’s Circuit in July this year to enlist them among private universities in Nairobi participating in the tournament.
