This March,the University drama team Zetech Furnace participated in the Central Regional Drama Festivals in Nyeri County, where they emerged victorious infour different categories. The competitions, held at Dedan Kimathi University, saw the team scoop the 1st position in the cultural dance category where they presented a dance by the christened Afande Jawar. The team also excelled in the Choral verse, stand-up comedy, and spoken word categories where they emerged second runners up.
The Kenya Schools and Colleges Drama Festival is a series of student theatre competitions in Kenya, held from January to April each year, advancing through local, county and regional stages to the National Drama Festival. Students from primary schools to colleges take part, with total annual participation of roughly five million students, making it the biggest educational theatre event in Africa.
“We are very happy to have proceeded on in the competitions and look forward to the Nationals which will be held in Bungoma.” said main soloistGeoffrey Omungu. He further noted that they are already preparing for the Nationals which will take place in April with the aim of winning the top prize.
The team was welcomed received by Vice Chancellor Prof. Njenga Munene, DVC in charge of Academics and Student Affairs Dr. Alice Njuguna and Dean of students Elizabeth Muhia who applauded them for having excelled in the competitions.
“As an institution, we are determined to ensure our students are well rounded individuals by exposing them to community outreach and extracurricular activities, while they balance their academics. We are proud and encourage them to aim for position one in all categories, in the national fete.” said Prof. Munene.
